Îmbrăţişări

Uneori e periculos să îmbrăţişezi pe cineva

pe care-l iubeşti aproape uitând de tine, -

te poţi trezi, fără nicio vină,

cu sânge curgând pe mâni.

Se poate, însă, şi 

ca rana celui drag 

să fie un bandaj 

pentru propria vatămătură.

Şi se mai poate întâmpla

ca, suprapuse-n îmbrăţişare,

cele două răni speriate

să se apere una pe cealaltă

cu dublul scut, neînfricatul,

al crustei dintre ele.

Hugging

It is sometimes dangerous to be hugging someone

whom one loves close to personal oblivion, -

you can find yourself, blamelessly,
with blood running on your hands.

There is a second possibility, still,

that the wound of the loved one

be a bandage

for your own sore spot.

Another possibility, yet,

is that, overlapped in embrace,

the two scared wounds

may defend each other

with the double shield, unyielding,

of their dividing crust.
