Costel Stancu - 1,2,3,4...

1.

fiecare an nepăsător la durerea mea.

Uneori, dragostea nu schimbă nimic.

***

I used to love you breathlessly. I would blindfold birds

and send them to track you down, along with my letters.

They always returned with no reply.

The silence between the two of us was so great,

even the deaf would tremble. Had they had a voice,

your words would have been nothing but pieces

in a liquid puzzle, impossible to complete.

I used to love you breathlessly, remember?

I would throw grains into the empty cage of your heart.

Then, the morning came and it was a blurry time.

The tree by the window blossomed like it does

every year, careless to my pain.

Sometimes, love doesn’t change a thing.

2.

***

To feel inside you the palpable essence of void,

a handful of viscous algae, a strange remnant

of the resignation to being, beyond any qualms, yourself,

up to baring one’s self. To be telling yourself: I

once was a lake above which the rain would fall

in drops rough like the caress of an old lady.

Be it life or be it death? Let it be both,

thrown together like figures on a dice

before it stops rolling! One never knows.

You gently whistle. Just one’s thoughts – famished and faithful

dogs – are waking up and start to sniff about the place.

There is no one to blame if you have

nested inside the shade of a tree.

3.

***

You wonder more and more why is it that when you forgive,

inside you there is the Other ready to cast

the stone. It is as if you were healing the wounds of prisoners,

only to enchain them later.

Who is the real you? One doesn’t know. It’s evening.

The slave tastes your beverage and falls dead.

He earns the freedom that you kept promising to him.

***

A silence like a locked-up drummer is floating

over the town there are snowflakes falling manuscripts

thrown out of the window by a luckless poet

frightened that after a night’s drunken binge

he spelt god with a small g

when you see me dying open the windows

wide so that my soul may return

to tell you oh well you’re silent

a camel would drink from the trace of

my foot rather than I hear a word from you

when I write to you sweetheart you keep answering me

in such cold pages that I cannot even lit

a fire with them it is snowing outside as in

a dumb alphabet whose letters

you have mastered a long time ago I fear myself

and you and our love three birds that

shall never nest together

AN EXCEPTIONAL STATE

As compared to others, I quite enjoy this emergency situation…

(There is nothing for me to regret, especially not the face-to-face encounters.)

Others may feel sorry for themselves:

Actors who cannot see their own reflection in the audience’s astonished gaze.

Teachers that are no longer enjoying the admiring glances of their students.

The desk clerks sighing for lack of troubled customers to exert their whims upon.

But I – while being a combination of actor, teacher, and clerk – I do not suffer for these things

(which I never really enjoyed).

I have finally found the time to breathe more freely in my own shell*

or to secrete the stomach fluid necessary for an improved digestion.

In the ever-lasting afternoons, the snail inside me can finally climb upon a dandelion stem and bask in the sunlight!

I have no illusions. I still expect to die one day… But I will have earned for myself

a few quiet months,

during which my only burden has been the pre-established route.

smoothness in space/ spatiul velin - Stefan Ciobanu

smoothness in space

when I find myself in an empty room
and I know not how to fill it up
I place a glass of milk in one of its corners
and then I go sit somewhere to the right
or to the left
and naturally I wait to start levitating
at the center I place nothing
the center is occupied by my neighbor’s hanging
bulb

*

de centru are atârnat vecinul
un bec

Migrating Lyrics

This is dedicated to a friend whom I love and who will always remain dear to me, no matter what.

Sensing organs

What my heart would feel remains a mystery
or what my ears may hear at dawn...
The whistling of a locomotive, as it leaves the station,
travels towards us and once again
we tremble, smitten by love.
My dog has died. Who will be guarding my home?
This train I missed. When will a next one come?
And what if love is scattered - how are we to piece it back together?
We are such wells, brimming with water,
only by song.

Stepping outside

It’s cool and quiet
as on a peaceful sea.
Darkness is hanging out its purple cloak
on poplars’ ends.
With my scorched soles
I feel the rocks, the grass
barely showing and I head out –
no roundabouts and no illusions –
towards the butterfly sunset
in my childhood.

Regret

I finally wiped off my nails.
I had them done with branches, on forest green.
You did not get to see them and it makes me think
of what you are going to wear today:
your brother’s tee-shirt or the shirt I gave you?
Every day seems lost to us…
We build walls for ourselves, by heaping up fluttering wings,
to keep out the beasts and the light.
The bird-less skies reflect our profile in green and black.

Carmen Secere - Selections from/Selectii din Mon amour, ma tristesse

„Writing as if you were to die tomorrow” seems to be  - in the vein of a serial and carefree feminine bourdieu – the sketch of a genuine poetic self-analysis as a geometric site of all the soul-searching visions of the authoress. (...) Here is a woman writer endowed with psychonanalytical skills and a book that moves us like the discovery of a new life form on an unknown planet.” – Angela Furtună

The white parlor

at the intentsive care unit
darkness seeps through the keyhole

light is beautifully quiet
in the last photograph

the white parlour is getting narrower
there are ambulances rushing through me

I fear not to be deserted
while sleeping

snail

shop-windows are shattered in the blindmen’s eyes
no road in between worlds whatsoever

underneath the eyelids
the mere snail’s winter sleep
troubled by the screaming of an ambulance
rushing through the darkness

never-ever
I do not recall riding the bike
I remember falling and the arms
that picked me up

the apple-trees were scattering their flowers
and I had found out that the earth
is much more comprising below the roots
as my father filled back the lime pit

I ran away from home before that morning
and got the chills.

the light lasts long enough for me to open up my arms
we inhabit it for one single day
just like the fireflies

the first and last dance with life
is cruelly beautiful

we shall never die
that is what you promised

the photographer

the memories are less colorful
since the pills in the drawer have multiplied
green, yellow, and two whites
on an empty stomach

therapy becomes boring
you cannot touch base
if you were born limp

good and evil are counterpoised
on the same thread
my name is forgotten
signifying the coming apocalypse

cold morning graphics
the earth sliding
from underneath my feet

in the end the cranes were gone
the park orchestra
and the photographer

Crisoare/ Etter (Stefan Ciobanu)

***

Love, I find myself in that place where, no matter how much I think of you, the EKG line will never take the contours of your face.
The place in which I can afford the luxury of playing a game without anybody comprehending the rules. Such freedom!

/Why do you keep hiding the toys of your inner child?/ the question comes from a white-robed darkness.
Or
/Why do you turn your face to the wall and keep counting cracks?/ the question comes from mister morning.

I confound everybody, leave them gaping, when I turn on the other side in my sleep but I keep still in my bed, for fear of tearing the perfusion out from the Sand Man.

Fear not, I do not snore! I tell the teddy bear.
As I was saying, I always leave them …. gaping.
How should you look upon me from this day on, love?
As if I were a magic bird, laying its death in a glass case.

Nervuri (Ada Carol)

Dis de dimineaţă

Ȋn prag de primăvară, frăgezimea salciei
mi-a amintit un jurământ.
M-am simţit ca un logodnic rătăcitor,
îndepărtat fără speranţă
de părul arămiu al iubitei.
Prin suflet mi s-au perindat atunci
imagini cu sufletul meu. El aici, eu acolo.
Parfumul i se risipeşte–n vânt…
Şi dintr-o dată m-am temut grozav,
crezând că nu voi mai putea atinge
pletele verzi ale dorului, ridicate zburdalnic
pe grumazul arborilor.

Early morning

So near spring. The willow’s frailty
Reminds me of an oath.
I felt like a roaming lover,
hopelessly banished
from his sweatheart’s copper locks.
There passed through my soul
Images of my soul. She was there, I was here.
Perfume scattered by the wind …
And suddenly, I shuddered with fear
Believing I would never get to touch again
The green leaves of my desire, playfully swirling
Up the long-necked trees.

*

I’m smiling. No matter why

I love the dreary weather
In early spring.
There’s pain in the air, in the frail buds,
The beasts are drowsy…
Myself, I’m just stirring,
Though in a little while I’ll be awake!
I know I will get back there,
Soon and without hindrances,
I will stop briefly in that place
Even if I do not know exactly when.
Esenin will be singing inside of me
About the roving moon and bitches
Separated from their pups,
About jingle-bell sleighs
Driven by the falling snow.
I love all these dearly
But maybe I will have to
Go through death in order to have them all.
So what, brother Serghei? Look how you’ve gone that way…
Afterall death, no matter how terrible,
Stands shamefacedly
In front of eternity.
